Introduction
It's been pretty difficult to find a resume tutorial curated for scientists, much less chemists who are in their early research careers. I hope this tutorial helps you get started on your resume. I will be using a LaTeX template that I created for my own resume, which is available for download below. This template, like every resume ever, is easy to edit and customize to fit your needs.
Resume Structure
Here are the key sections every resume should include:
- Contact Information (preferably in the header)
- Work Experience
- Research Experience (if you have it)
- Education
- Skills (what things you've used in lab, research, or class-wise - coding is especially needed nowadays)
- Certifications (optional, as these are usually uncommon)
Each section should be clearly labeled and easy to read. Use a consistent format throughout your resume.
Tips for Writing
Keep these tips in mind:
- Use clear and straight to the point language! Don't try to sound like your papers here.
- Focus on achievements, goal-oriented things rather than responsibilities. Especially if you're applying to a job.
- Tailor your resume to the job you're applying for. So having a general template for yourself that you can change on a job-to-job basis is important.
- Use bullet points for easy readability. I heard that finance kids tend to use square bullets as they're more demanding or something. Haven't tried it yet.
Template
You can access this resume template PDF below. Just open it in Word or LaTeX, and it'll work. I prefer to write mine in VS Code as I'm able to hyperlink and do some more stuff that I feel I'm better able to be creative with.
